The US currently generates 18% of its energy needs through the use of several renewable technologies. They include wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, hydropower, hydrogen and others. With the exception of geothermal, all utilize resources which are free and available in abundance. In most cases these renewable energy generating systems are considered to be environmentally benign. However, these technologies are also considered to be more expensive than conventional fossil fuel and nuclear energy sources. One result is that more extensive deployment of renewable technologies has been stalled by perceived economic barriers. What are these economic barriers? How accurate are the economic arguments against renewable technologies? How can theses barriers and arguments be overcome? The link below will take you to a series of well-researched and persuasive analyses of the economics of renewable energy. Follow these links to much more information on this important debate.
