ULTRALIGHT HYBRID VEHICLES

Overall the transportation sector, including all of our personal automobiles, accounted for 35% of the energy consumed in the US in 1990. 97% of that energy came from petroleum. Today, despite decades of effort to increase the use of public transportation, develop industrial-scale alternatives, and wean Americans off their much-loved "gas guzzlers," enegy consumed continues to rise.

The good news is that a concept pioneered by one of America's most creative and influential energy efficiency promoters is moving closer to reality. The concept -- known as the Ultralight Hybrid Vehicle -- is elegant, effective, and workable. The original impetus came from high in the mountains of Colorado where an organization known as the Rocky Mountain Institute has been quietly and effectively communicating with industry and political leaders. Led by energy "guru" Amory Lovins, this organization has demonstrated the essential "do-ability" of this technology so effectively that their partners now include many major auto and policy makers.

The link below will lead you to a cogent and exciting Web presentation on this extraordinary technology, as well as other links to equally persuasive and professional presentations on many other elements of the overall energy debate.
